OLD MASTER 2.0
Brooke Moyse has a fascination with old masters. Think Raphael, Bruegel the Elder, Vermeer, and as recent as John Constable. Indeed you can even see the colours from these artists in her work. Moyse explores space and it’s relationship to colour on her canvases. These varying sized works are distilled experiences from the past that she develops slowly over periods of time. With her work, Moyse says she wants to create a time-based experience for the viewer. One moment can reveal an aspect about her work that in the next is sublimated or changed. This, she says, is an important decision making factor before she puts paint to canvas or when choosing colours.

Although Moyse is moving away from representational work, by eliminating the horizon line, she still begins with that initial space so there is some foundation. But in the end it becomes abstracted and space is fluid on her canvas. Her technique in painting is equally fascinating. Her vivid brushstrokes and vibrant colours are engaging. Jason Andrew, director of Norte Maar Gallery says, “…Her work achieves a freshness, a newness…” The light moves through space in her work. And colours are juxtaposed to create depth, lightness and fragility.

Brooke Moyse is currently planning on competing for several awards and continues to show at Norte Maar Gallery on Wyckoff Avenue.

Christian Lacroix files for Bankruptcy Protection

Usually, Fashion doesn't begin to worry until the bellwether designer Christian Lacroix begins to hurt. As a sign of the current recession's impact on global fashion and luxury markets, Lacroix has filed for bankruptcy protection. "The voluntary petition, similar to Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States, was filed with the commercial court in Paris, which will decide whether to restructure or liquidate the company." Let's hope that we will start making a turnaround in the economic crisis before this takes it toll on any other houses.

We've all experienced the attraction to dangerously attractive dark men. It's the excitement and unknown that seems to pique our interest. It leads us to admire their disregard for norms and unconcern for consequences. We wish to experience those moments of blissful abandon and the passionate coupling that will no doubt ensue. However, these hopes that we will experience excitement and passion are difficult to reconcile with our sensible societal notions of stability. Invariably, the uomo scuro will lead to fun and eventual heartbreak. But wasn't it a fun ride?

Such days are long with worry.
Knitted brows and hassled fingers nimbly at work,
Pulling tailors tacks, slipping from one place to the next.
Long with hours, tinge heart chambers with pangs of regret.
Scratching memories: Reliving costly errors. Twisting away.
Grey is the water that clouds the day.
And fills the space with eerie light.
Shining silently still and gloss with watery stillness.
Insidiously born of anguished shapes;
Forms that float and vanish came across the envisioned path then occludes the way.
While silently musing the temperatures depth, pulling tacks and slipping away.
So falls the evening hours on Brooklyn’s plain,
Silently creep with unfocused thoughts,
While colour fades and light that slips away.

Second Tag Graffiti

Thus my love of Constructivism manifests itself in my latest tag. Mixed with computer generated shapes, I created a yellow fire suspension. The important part here was to use colours that I find most attractive; Vermilion, Canary, Red Ochre, Burnt Umber etc. Overall, I wanted an energetic, warm composition with depth.

This is an attempt at graffiti.
I initially found it difficult to find the idea I wanted to put across. This is the result. I found these colours are the most attractive to me. And I added the crackling effect because a little decay gives a sense of legitimacy to any design.

Several gay Jamaican men have been murdered by violent mobs. As a response, I created this image of an Afro-Caribbean male. Let's hope the day will come when gay men of Jamaica can live freely and be who they are with liberty and without fear.

An Island With a Wahoo

So... my friend and mentor, Bob De Luccia, wrote a story called An Island With A Wahoo. On this island set somewhere in the fictional Caribbean, this "creature" rules unopposed through fear and mystery. He has the liberty to do as he pleases with whomever he pleases. That's the trouble with paradise, It looks beautiful from afar but there are sinister secrets in the dark that will infect you inside out.

I used the stencil and stamp work of West Africa commonly used on textiles to create my highly stylized portrait. The lines of West African art, in particular the Baule/Akan people, are really inspirational.
